Movie Critic Matt Atchity: Labor Day Weekend Movies

Posted: Updated:

The November Man – Rotten at 34%

Starring: Pierce Brosnan, Olga Kurylenko, Bill Smitrovich, Luke Bracy

Directed by: Roger Donaldson (The Bank Job, Thirteen Days, The Bounty)

An ex-CIA agent gets lured out of retirement for “one last job.” Based on the Bill Granger novel “There Are No Spies.”

Critics are disappointed. There's a good cast here, but the story loses steam, and it never earns the drama it's looking for. I thought it was OK.

As Above/So Below – Rotten at 36%

Starring: Perdita Weeks, Ben Feldman

Directed by: John Erick Dowdie (Quarantine, Devil)

Found footage horror movie. A team of explorers ventures into the catacombs beneath Paris, which turns into a journey of madness and terror.

Critics don't like it. They say the movie captures a scary sense of claustrophobia, but it doesn't otherwise deliver on the scares or anything else.

The Congress – Fresh at 75%

Starring: Robin Wright, Harvey Keitel, Paul Giamatti, Danny Huston, Jon Hamm

Directed by: Ari Folman (Waltz with Bashir)

A fictionalized version of Robin Wright creates a digital, unaging version of herself to star in future films.

Critics really like it. Wright gives a powerful performance, and overcomes the films somewhat messy structure.

Ghostbusters – Fresh at 97%

Starring: Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis, Annie Potts, William Atherton

Directed by: Ivan Reitman

30th anniversary re-release of the comedy classic. Three scientists studying the paranormal lose their University positions, so they go into business for themselves.

Critics love it. This is the movie that really cemented Bill Murray as a star. Still considered a classic, and a great chance to see it again on the big screen.
