Person of interest named in Armada teen's murder investigation

Posted: Updated:
PORT HURON, Mich. (WJBK) - Standing in handcuffs and an orange jumpsuit on Tuesday was James Donald VanCallis, 32, appearing for his preliminary exam.

He was in court with his father, 66-year-old James Bernard VanCallis, and out on bond in Port Huron for drug charges.

Just after waiving their exams, Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw named James VanCallis Jr. an official person of interest in the murder of 14-year-old April Millsap.

This comes just one day after FBI and police searched the VanCallis residence and nearby properties in Goodells. It was the second search in less than three weeks. The searches, police say, were necessary.

But those searches were unfair, according to the VanCallis' attorney Dean Ankouny, and left the VanCallis house in shambles.

He said that police are wrongfully targeting James VanCallis Jr.

It has been nearly four weeks since Millsap was found beaten and strangled while walking her dog penny along the Macomb Orchard Trail in Armada.

Police tell Fox 2 this announcement was a week in the making but are still asking for tips, adding that VanCallis, Jr. is not yet a suspect.

April Millsap's mother tells Fox 2 that her family has no connection to the VanCallis family and hopes police are looking at the right person.

VanCallis' attorney says his client is innocent.
