Girl mauled by raccoon gets big surprise after surgery

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - She's gone through so many surgeries since getting attacked by a raccoon as a baby, and now Charlotte Ponce has just wrapped up another operation -- but this one came with a happy surprise. The gift her surgeon gave her something that made her dreams come true.

Charlotte, 12, was at Beaumont Hospital where an ear that was grown in her arm that doctors created after carving it out of her rib cartilage was placed on the side of her head.

Skin from her thigh was placed on her arm as part of the surgery.

Once it was over with, Charlotte had a surprise for her.

"I got my ear pierced," she says.

Dr. Kongrit Chaiyasate was finishing the skin graft near the end of the surgery when he fashioned a makeshift earring for Charlotte, piercing her new ear.

"I promised her," he says, adding it will be the last surgery for the girl for awhile. "She's doing great. The next step will be to make sure everything looks right."

Charlotte's dream was to wear earrings, which so many Fox 2 viewers sent in for her.

Once her new ear heals, she will be able to wear a regular earring but does not know which one she wants.

"All of them," she says.
