Jackie Robinson West advances after defeating Rhode Island

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Jackie Robinson West took on the team from Rhode Island in the Little League World Series Monday night, and won.

"I knew they, I knew they could beat them," fan Felecia Bell said.

There is nothing like a do or die game to make a team step up to the plate, and Jackie Robinson West did just that. It was a game filled with plenty of tension.

The Mayor's pregame comment to the news media ended abruptly with a home run to start the game.

"I just met a young woman who's a cousin, she's a truck driver for the army, and her cousin is playing baseball, (cheers erupt in the background) (mayor gives thumbs up) there it is, the rest is history," said Mayor Emanuel.

With Jackie Robinson West jumping into the lead to start the game, fans dressed in their yellow T-shirts brought their enthusiasm and hope. The crowd of several hundred gathered in their team's home field knowing this was a must win game.

"We knew they could do it, we are going to go all the way baby," said fan Lydia Allen.

Early heroics gave fans plenty of reason to cheer.

"It was a lot of fun being here, getting to watch baseball game because I don't watch baseball games a lot," said a young girl.

However, Rhode Island was in the same must-win situation as JRW, and so the see-saw game continued to keep fans on an emotional roller coaster.

"Proud, absolutely proud, I enjoyed being out here with everyone with our community, to support these young men, in their efforts, so I'm very proud of all of them," said fan Robin Randall.

Jackie Robinson West ended up defeating Cumberland, Rhode Island 8-7 to advance in the Little League World Series.

"It was like a professional game, go JRW," fan Michelle Gordon added.

The City of Chicago will host a fourth watch party Tuesday for friends, families and supporters of JRW. The watch party will be held in the auditorium of Mt. Vernon Elmentary School at 10540 S. Morgan at 6:30 p.m. The watch party was previously scheduled to take place at Jackie Robinson Park on the same block, but the location was changed due to inclement weather.
