J.K. Rowling sends shooting survivor Hogwarts acceptance letter

Posted: Updated:

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has reached out to a young girl whose entire family was killed in a Texas massacre.

On July 9, six members of the Stay family were killed when a 33-year-old gunman opened fire near Houston. Cassidy only survived because the bullet meant for her grazed her skull. She played dead until she could call police.

Rowling recently got word that 15-year-old Cassidy Stay quoted Professor Dumbledore from the Harry Potter novels during a memorial service for her parents and four siblings just three days after the tragedy.

"Happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light," Stay said during the ceremony.

After hearing Stay's speech, Rowling was so moved by the young girl that she tracked her down and wrote a handwritten note of comfort to Stay as Professor Dumbledore. According to a report, Rowling also sent a wand, an autographed Harry Potter book, Hogwarts acceptance letter, and school supply list.
