Hundreds of state and federally protected birds are causing health concerns in one Del Valle neighborhood. But, because of a federal law, residents are learning there's not a lot they can do about it.
As the sun goes down, more and more continue fly into the trees directly behind people's homes.
The egrets and blue herrings started flying into the area in February. Fast forward six months later and you have hundreds of federally and state protected birds living amongst Del Valle residents.
Should they pose a health or safety risk though, you can reach out to Texas Wildlife services to have the roost declared a nuisance.
"If that happens, they can obtain a federal and state permit to eradicate the heronry, but we would recommend that as a last resort," said Kelly Simon of Texas Parks and Wildlife.
"I shouldn't have to go get permits, when they can see the problem with the birds," said Del Valle resident Jason Gamache.
Once a homeowner receives the permit, they'd work together with Texas Wildlife services to figure out the best course of action.
