Phoenix police ID burglary suspect after fatal shooting

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX - A burglary suspect is dead after trading gunfire with Phoenix police while he was perched on a rooftop.

Sgt. Steve Martos says police were called around 2 a.m. to an apartment complex near Northern and 35th avenues about a possible break-in.

Martos says 23-year-old Mark Lanza was standing on the roof of a patio next to a condominium and wielding a gun.

He says the suspect ignored officers' commands to put down his firearm.

The suspect then fired at a group of five officers and jumped off the patio. The officers shot back.

Police say when Lanza pointed the gun at other group of officers, they fired back and hit him.

Lanza died at the scene.

No officers were injured.

Investigators spent most of the morning processing the scene. Officers believe Lanza was trying to break into a vacant condo.

According to police, he had an outstanding felony warrant for robbery.
