Recycled car program helps those in need

Posted: Updated:
WJBK - "Life has been a struggle for me since I was little," said Debra Gregory. "(It) continues to be very hard."

For years, abusive relationships and a string of domestic issues kept Gregory from owning her own car and moving forward.

But today all that changed -- thanks to charitable organizations like 1-800 charity cars.

Gregory was chosen by the charitable organization which works with the National Auto Body Council's Recycled Rides program to donate vehicles to those in need.

"I can go to the doctor, go shopping, take my daughter to work," Gregory said. "Life will be different. It's a miracle."

"We take vehicles that would be sitting in salvage yards and we rejuvenate cars," said Nick Notte, president of the National Auto Body Council.

And organizers make sure recipients don't receive a gift they can't take care of.

"We go through the charities and the charities' veteran folks," Notte said. "They have to be able to afford vehicle."

"(Gregory's) car may look shiny and new but it's thanks to technicians who dedicated time to this project."

"When it came into the showroom, we do have some pretty good damage but when you start, it is a great cause," said Marco Grossi, president, Collision Craftsmen

It's a cause that's helping Gregory remove roadblocks and rebuild her life.

"Tomorrow, I'm going to be looking out the window," Gregory said. "Tonight look out the window and tell God thank you for all people that made this possible."
