Car Plunges Into Delaware River At Penn's Landing

Police say they pulled a man from the Delaware River at Penn's Landing after his vehicle sped through Old City and wound up in the river around 5:55 p.m. on Monday.

SkyFOX was over the Delaware River along Columbus Boulevard, between Market and Chestnut streets, when the Philadelphia Fire Dept.'s Marine Unit was making the rescue.

Police say 25-year-old Marc Oliverio was at the wheel. Rescuers rushed to revive the driver.

"It's unbelievable something you only see on the movie that you don't see in real life,” said one witness.

Eyewitnesses thought an action scene from movie was being filmed when the black Volkswagen Touareg came speeding down the ramp towards Penn’s Landing.

Roslyn Green was working inside inside the parking lot booth at Penn’s Landing when the car passed 10-feet from her.

"He came speeding down and couldn't stop. He hit that wall and flipped over,” she said. "I just froze because I've never seen something like that."

Some say the car never hit the brakes before going airborne.

"He went right across a pedestrian ramp. Thank God there was no function going on. If that ramp would have been crowded this would have been a lot worse,” said Battalion Chief Robert Clark.

Two Good Samaritans, who live at Pier 3 Condominiums, jumped in the river to try to help the driver. However, it was too late. The 36-year-old male was pronounced dead at Jefferson University Hospital.

According to authorities, it all started as a hit-and-run, about a mile away at 4th and Arch. When police say the man fled after hitting a car. Eyewitnesses saw the car drive through Old City before plunging into the river.

"We literally thought it had been just in an accident. And it was a hit-and-run, and he ran,” said eyewitness Leah Perez.

As the crews spent the night removing the wreckage from the Delaware River, police are trying to put all the pieces together, as onlookers are still in shock over what they saw.

“What was going through his mind? Why would he do that? Flying through Market Street down the ramp, then hit the gate and right in the water. Its crazy,” said eyewitness Jarrell Rease.
