Rescuers Raise Money For Blind Kitten’s Surgery

Posted: Updated:

Cold, wet, alone and blind. That's how a South Philadelphia family says they found a stray kitten along a busy road two weeks ago.

That family needed your help to get their newest family member the proper care. Thanks for the FOX 29 viewers, the owners reached their goal within 5 minutes of the story airing.

FOX 29's Drew Dickman shares their story.

The most distinct feature of a cat is typically their eyes, but this kitten relies on personality.

The spunky short haired domestic tabby has no eyes; however, Kristen Angelucci and her family can't take their eyes off her.

"They said she was most likely born with eyes, but her infection in her eyes became so bad that they kind of just rotted out. They said it was called conjunctivitis,” Angelucci said.

Aptly named Hope, she has been through a lot in her short life.

Angelucci and her fiancé Chas Lewis said they spotted the stray kitten in the middle of a thunderstorm two weeks ago on Chester Pike in Glenolden.

"I was heartbroken at that point and I felt so bad I had to take her in. I didn't want to send her anywhere else or to a shelter because I figured they want to put her down because of her issues,” she said.

It may not look that way now, but Lewis said she was in rough shape.

"They said she had worms, they said she had ear mites. She was infested with all kinds of stuff,” he said.

Hope's visits to the vet aren't over yet.

To prevent infection, she needs her eye sockets sown shut.

"The cost for her surgery for her eyes they say is around roughly 300-350. Then she needs to be spayed which is 60 and however much her vaccines are,” Angelucci said.

Add in medications for the feline and the price tag was out of this family's budget.

They set up a Go Fund Me account because the animal lovers didn't want to give her up. Thankfully, they reached their goal.

"Sweet, affectionate, loving, playful. She's just, honestly she's the best kitten that we've ever had,” Angelucci said.
