Testimony begins in police slaying trial

Posted: Updated:

HOUSTON (AP) - Two witnesses tell jurors they saw a 23-year-old man fatally shoot a Houston-area police officer and a business owner two years ago on Christmas Eve.

Testimony began Monday in the capital murder trial of Harlem Lewis III, accused of killing Bellaire officer Jimmie Norman and auto body shop owner Terry Taylor.

Prosecutors say Norman had pulled over Lewis for a traffic violation, got into a struggle with Lewis and was shot. Authorities say Taylor was shot when he tried to help Norman.

The Houston Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1sUi0sR ) that Tyrone Moncriffe, one of Lewis' attorneys, told jurors his client "didn't go over there to shoot a police officer or anyone."

Lewis' attorneys have said they'll focus on convincing jurors Lewis should be given life without parole rather than a death sentence.
