Suspected South Austin car burglar arrested

Posted: Updated:

There are four cameras constantly watching this South Austin home and Jeremy Shirk can see them any time, even on his phone.

"It's well worth it, for the peace of mind," said Jeremy.

He's feeling a lot better than when we last spoke to him at the end of May.

Jeremy said, "He's lucky the cops got him before we did."

You're looking at surveillance video Jeremy shared with FOX 7. The suspect comes equipped with a backpack and flashlight. He even takes the time to scope out the trunk before taking off with a pair of boxing gloves.

Detective Wendell Stevens, with the Austin Police Department, said, "This was a great example of teamwork between the victims, their cooperation with us, the patrol officers in the police department and the media."

"We got the Crime Stoppers tip, which gave us a name, pointed us in the right direction," Stevens said. "About a month later, a patrol officer, on a completely unrelated case...a witness came forward with some information about the burglary."

Jeremy said, "As far as the video, your coverage, FOX 7's coverage, and the Austin Police Department's uncanny ability to solve crimes, it just amazed me."

"I wish every case I had could work out that way," added Stevens. "I wish they could all be like this."

Richard Hargis is charged with burglary of a vehicle, a state jail felony, because of prior similar crimes on his record.

"The main goal for me is getting the property back to the owners, I've been a victim myself," said Stevens.

Jeremy said, "I had no idea I'd see these things ever again, ever."

"The first thing that these crooks are gonna do is they're gonna walk up and look in your car and if they see something in there that they think they wanna steal, they're gonna try the door handle and go in and if it's something they really want, they're gonna smash window and go in," added Stevens.

Jeremy says they still leave their doors unlocked, so they don't have to keep paying for window repairs, but no longer leave anything inside their vehicles.

Detective Stevens says it's important to have a home security system. If you choose to add surveillance cameras, it's also important to have them well lighted.
