MATTITUCK, N.Y. (AP) - The Coast Guard and other agencies are investigating a deadly plane crash in Long Island Sound.

A Southold town police captain says the lone occupant of the aircraft did not survive.

Coast Guard spokeswoman Jetta Disco says the small plane was reported down shortly before 9 a.m. Monday about 8 miles north of Mattituck Inlet on eastern Long Island.

A pilot from another plane in the area reported seeing the light aircraft crash into the water.

There was a report that someone had escaped via parachute, but that was not immediately confirmed.

The Coast Guard is working with local police agencies.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the plane is believed to have been fixed-wing single engine aircraft called a Raven.

The area is about 85 miles east of Manhattan.
