Philly 4th Of July Jam Concert Rocks Despite Brief Scuffle

Philadelphia celebrated America's 238th birthday with a big bash Friday.

The Benjamin Franklin Parkway was packed Friday night as some of the top acts in music took the stage for the "Wawa Welcome America" Philly 4th of July Jam Concert.

FOX 29's Dave Kinchen was live on the parkway and reported at 10 p.m. that there had just been some sort of scuffle. As he prepared for his live report, groups of people began rushing toward an exit. It was such a steady flow of people that Kinchen said he was pinned between a young family and a gate.

Nicki Minaj, who was performing at the time, stopped her set briefly when the altercation unfolded.

A Philadelphia police mounted patrol moved in as there was a report of an officer being tackled, and it looked like things were being brought under control.

Aside from that "scary situation," Kinchen said the Independence Day celebration on the parkway had been a good event and crowds were having a great time.

Highlights included a hometown house band, the legendary Roots, back with the soundtrack and bringing some friends from the iconic DJ Jazzy Jeff to the soulful pop of Vicci Martinez.

The Friday night fun brought out the young and young at heart from all over.

"Coming from New York to this, wow! I'm still taking it all in," said concertgoer Frank Guialdo. "I'm a little blown away. I did not expect to be doing what I'm doing right now on the Fourth of July."

Another concertgoer said, "I think it's going to be really exciting. This is like the first time I've ever gone to something this big, and it's all free, so it's awesome."

Everyone is here with a favorite. Ed Sheeran's name came up a few times. But one big name just kept coming up – Nicki Minaj. You would have almost thought she was the main act.

"Nicki's my girl. She's killing it right now," one fan said.

A female fan said, "I think what she's doing in a male-dominated industry, is pretty amazing. She's my girl. I love her."

The live music led to musically-choreographed fireworks, which were flying until around 11:15 p.m.
