NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A Maryland man is under arrest for allegedly leaving his toddler in a locked, hot car while he went shopping on Long Island, Suffolk County Police said.

Authorities charged Melvin Marroquin, 30, with endangering the welfare of a child and second-degree reckless endangerment, police said.

A passerby heard a child crying inside a 2000 Nissan Frontier parked in the Big H Shopping Center in Huntington at about 12:40 p.m. Thursday. The car was locked, the windows were closed, and the engine was shut off, police said.

The passerby called 911, and two officers responded and broke a window and rescued the 2-year-old girl, police said. The girl was "lethargic and not speaking" and was rushed to Huntington Hospital for treatment, police said.

When Marroquin returned to the car 10 minutes later, cops arrested him. He will be held overnight and arraigned Friday, police said.

Police estimated the temperature in the car to be about 120 degrees.
