Vidcon 2014 Makes Web-Stars Rock Stars!

Posted: Updated:
Anaheim, CA -

Imagine you are outside the Anaheim Convention Center and a couple of a hundred people are screaming, taking pictures and running after someone. Your first thought might be... 'big celeb?' Maybe someone I know, but unless you spend time on YouTube channels you might not know someone like Louis Cole, Kingsley or Kian Lawley from the YouTube channel Our2ndLife. When I saw fans like 13 year old Madison Foster from Phoenix swooning over Luis Cole I asked her "is your heart going pitter-patter?" "Very," she said and then giggled. About Kingsley Angie Deng said "he's a God!" Maybe not Gods, but they're getting rock star treatment at the 5th annual VidCon which is a convention for everything video on the web

Five years ago when Vidcon started there were only 1800 people who came to learn about what's new on the web, trends in the industry and see their favorite stars. This year, it's sold out with some 20,000. And, lots of them are 13 to 17. This is a big YouTube demographic, but it's not just about how teens are flocking to Anaheim to see their favorites. Behind the scenes are panel discussions and speeches about the industry, how Hollywood is interested in dramas and comedies designed just for the web and breakout personalities. Even some mainstream content providers are looking toward the web for the next big thing. And, Louis Cole, for one, likes that. He tells me, "if brands and big companies want to get involved and reached a loyal audience and they can find a way to work with some of the content creators that are out there I think it's a brilliant thing."

Big companies are getting involved. Dreamworks just started a YouTube channel called DreamworksTV and others are getting into original web-content as well. To singers Matt Fowler and Brandon Hassan from Irving, Texas it's all about new content. Hassan says "I really think getting content out there every week is how you get engagement from these fans.

They must be right. Vidcon is sold out! It runs through the weekend.
