Container Gardening with Succulents and Air Plants

Posted: Updated:
Succulents and air plants are both easy to grow and offer an amazing diversity of colors and textures. Here are some basics of planning and planting a succulent container garden.

  • What are Succulents?
  1. Plants that store water in various structures, such as leaves and stems
  2. They are very heat and drought tolerant
  • Why are Succulents Popular?
  1. Easy care, low water option
  2. Extremely diverse and come in many colors, shapes and sizes
  3.  Blend with any décor
  4. Use a glazed pot that coordinates or contrasts with your color scheme
  5. Clean lines, which make them architectural and modern
  • How to Grow Succulents
  1. Succulents love the sun, but some will take partial sun
  2. Allow for proper drainage – most important step
  3. When planting in a pot, make sure it has a drainage hole
  4. Use EB Stone Cactus Mix in containers
  5. Arrange your plants in the container to design your garden
  6. Carefully remove the pots; if you’ve chosen plants with spines, wear gloves.
  7. Gently place succulent potting soil and pack it gently around and in between your plants
  8. Mix & match plants based on what you love! OR in small pots, use just one succulent and create different heights & shapes by grouping 3 pots
  9. Use gravel, sea glass, marbles, or river rocks around your plants for more color and contrast
  10.   For a more professional and polished look, fill the container full of plants
  • Air plants are another fun option
  1. Use air plants in glass globes with decorative rock
  2. Use as a name card holder for a dinner party
  3. Sea shells make a great decorative container
  4. Make a striking centerpiece with stemware of varying heights—mix air plants and tea lights
