Expert Tips for Summertime Makeup

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA, Ga. - If you want your skin to look good, even in the sweltering Georgia heat, lighten up on everything except sunscreen.

Emily Negron has been using makeup since she was a teenager. Her secret to summer? First she moisturizes, then she preps her skin. Negron explains, "During the summertime. I make sure that primer is in place. That's also why I use a mineral-based makeup, because it's a little healthier for my skin with the humidity level."

Dermatologist Dr. Rutledge Forney of Dermatology Affiliates of Atlanta says you know you're going to sweat in the Georgia heat, so use a light hand with makeup. Go too heavy, she says, and it can make you look older than you really are. Dr. Forney says, “If you already have fine lines and wrinkles, and you put on really thick coat of makeup trying to disguise brown or red spots, it can sometimes get in those crinkles, and make them look more obvious."

You may want to can switch from a heavier foundation to something lighter, like a tinted moisturizer. Or, you could give up a heavier product, like your cream concealer and just use a foundation. But, Dr. Forney says, "If you are trying to use your makeup as a concealer, it is important that you have the right weight of makeup. So, you don't conceal and at the same emphasize wrinkles. And, find the right kind of finisher or powder to give you a smooth, light look.”

And before you sweat through your workout, lose the makeup. Dr. Forney says products like foundation can block your skins ability to sweat.

Emily Negron says her motto: less is more. She says, “The summer is really a great time being minimal. I use a lot of bronze- type tones, because it makes me look fresher without having too much on the skin.”

And remember, don’t forget to put on sunscreen, even if your makeup contains it. The makeup alone may not be enough to protect your skin from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet rays. You need an SPF of about 30 or higher, even on those cloudy days.

I think this is what many of us assume about outlet mall shopping -- we get rock bottom prices on everything from clothes to housewares on brand names that are either leftovers from last year or this year's overstock. Well, it's not quite like that.
