The police chief of a small city north of Austin was fatally shot Thursday night responding to a report that a man had a gun.

The Bell County Sheriff’s Office says Chief Lee Dixon was gunned down.

It happened just after 5 p.m. in Little River Academy, which is located south of Temple and east of Killeen.

According to the sheriff, Dixon responded to a home near West Main Street after a call about a man with a gun.

The chief called the sheriff's office for backup. Moments later, 9-1-1 calls started coming in about an officer being shot.

The Bell County Sheriff says a suspect is in custody. The suspect’s name has not been released at this time.

The sheriff told reporters that he hopes the county district attorney seeks the death penalty for the suspect in custody.
