Study: Most Americans get over 8 hours of sleep each day

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, most Americans get eight hours and forty-five minutes of sleep each day.

Eleven-thousand people aged fifteen and older were surveyed.

The results are up nearly two full hours from a 2013 study by Gallup which found most Americans got six point eight hours each day.
         
This year's study also found unemployed people get an average of an hour more than those who work.

The total sleep times do include naps during the day.

    Sleep studies show that 7 hours of sleep is the optimal amount. People who say they get between 6.5 and 7.5 hours live longer than people who get more or less. The CDC is putting together a panel of doctors to review the literature and come up with new recommendations.
