HARRISBURG, Pa. -

The Pa. Liquor Control Board is alerting consumers who purchased Indigenous Selections Prosecco Brut 2013 to a possible safety issue.

The alert comes after they received several reports of full wine bottles spontaneously exploding in Fine Wine & Good Spirit stores. They urge consumers to use caution when handling the bottle and to carefully dispose of the product.

"The whole thing goes boom, like this,” The Wine School of Philadelphia Director Keith Wallace said, "The only bottles that this would ever happen to would be champagne, Prosecco, things that have bubbles in it, which cause a lot of pressure."

Wallace said he's only read about this happening in history books.

"This is shocking because the last time I heard about this was in the 1800s,” he said.

So the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board took the Italian sparkling wine off the shelves in 180 stores across the state.

A spokesperson said the cork pops and the glass shatters when they explode.

So far, there are only reports of bursting bottles in Fine Wine and Good Spirits Stores, but they don't want to take any chances.

"That's not just dangerous, that can be life threatening. That's shard of glass coming at you at 50 miles per hour,” Wallace said.

The board said they're looking into why the bubbly keeps busting.

Wallace said storage temperature could be one of the reasons the bottles that retailed for 12.99 are breaking.

"If they put just a little too much pressure into that bottle and the glass is just weak enough, that puppy can explode,” he said.

If you purchased the product, please do not return the bottle to the store. Instead, the board asks that you contact your local Fine Wine & Good Sprits Store for a full refund.
