Marietta approves new apartment safety plan

Posted: Updated:
MARIETTA, Ga. - The crime rate in some Marietta apartment complexes have residents fearful in their own homes, but a new plan approved by the city council may soon offer some peace of mind.

Some residents say they couldn't be happier to hear city council members have come up with a way to combat crime in their community. It would allow the police department to partner up with apartment complexes to fight crime in their community. There's been talk many of the apartment complexes, especially on the Franklin Road corridor, are disproportionately contributing to the city's crime rate.

The program would ask those complexes to pay $250. In exchange, officers would give suggestions as to how to keep their complexes from looking so inviting to criminals. Also as part of the program, police would also be allowed on to the property to look for health and safety code violations.

Originally, apartment complexes would have been forced to join the program, but it is now voluntary.
