Perry, Texas hospitals propose plan for VA backlog

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Gov. Rick Perry is set to announce efforts to identify Texas hospitals willing to take more patients out of backlogged Veterans Affairs facilities.

Perry will also propose Thursday to the VA that providers be reimbursed through Medicare so that payments are made quicker. The Associated Press received details of the plans ahead of Perry's planned announcement at Fort Hood.

The plans would require the federal government's approval.

Perry aides say Christus Health is among the Texas providers that are on board. Christus spokeswoman Abby McNeil says the provider has had trouble getting reimbursed for VA patients and has 1,500 claims that are more than 30 days old.

Data show Texas VA facilities have some of the longest wait times for veterans trying to see a doctor for the first time.
