Burlington Township Middle School Teachers Credited With Saving Student’s Life

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON COUNTY, N.J. -

Teachers at a Burlington County School are being credited with saving a student’s life on Wednesday morning.

Their quick actions helped a seventh grade girl after she collapsed at the beginning of gym class at Burlington Township Middle School.

School district officials said more than 40 of their staff members are trained in CPR and the use of an AED.

When this student went down, Fox 29 was told their training just kicked it, while they waited for first responders to arrive.

"I heard one of my gym teachers call in that the girl was having a seizure. And then I looked out and saw her on the gym floor," 7th grader Anna Chilton said.

Chilton said she had just left the locker room, when the beginning of gym class turned chaotic.

“As I was coming out, that’s when her heart stopped beating and my gym teacher started running. I’m not sure what she was going to get," she said.

That teacher grabbed this AED

“The first few minutes are the most important part," Endeavor Emergency Squad Chief David Ekelburg said.

“People just went into automatic mode and did what they needed to do," Burlington Township School District Interim Superintendant Paul Spaventa said.

Several staff members came to the 7th grader’s rescue, performing CPR and using the AED in the two minutes they waited for Endeavor Emergency Squad to get there.

"The staff had already defibrillated the child once and it was through their actions that probably saved the child’s life," Ekelburg said.

What caused her collapse is unclear.

We’re told the girl was hospitalized, but responsive and talking to her family.

Just three weeks ago, an eighth grader at Harrington Middle School in Mt Laurel collapsed during gym class and died.

Burlington Township School District Officials said that incident was on their minds.

“We are a very tight knit community here and our students are our children and we value them, love them and it’s our goal to make sure our students are safe and that they’re healthy," School Spokesperson Liz Scott said.

Scott said they’re hoping to get more of their staff emergency certified.

Another 140 people have expressed interest in learning these life saving skills.

“Without the training and without the AED devices, our conversation would probably be different," Scott said.

Beginning in September, all New Jersey public schools will be required by law to have an AED and someone trained in CPR on hand during school and athletic events.

It’s being called Janet's Law.

You don’t have to look any further than this incident to see how that legislation can save a life.
