Feds may drop challenge of part of immigration law

PHOENIX (AP) - The Obama administration is signaling that it may drop its legal challenge of the most contentious part of Arizona's 2010 immigration law.

Lawyers say the U.S. Justice Department and Gov. Jan Brewer agreed in principle to dismiss the federal challenge of a requirement that police, while enforcing other laws, question the immigration status of those suspected of being in the country illegally.

In exchange, Arizona would agree to permanently bar another section that the courts have blocked on a preliminary basis.

The attorneys cautioned that they haven't yet come up with a proposed court order that would carry out their agreement in principle.

If the deal comes to fruition, all that would remain of the Obama administration case would be a challenge to a tweak to a 2005 smuggling law.
