Sex crimes against a Coweta County boy have prompted an international investigation and led to charges against a man in the U.K.
Steven Slater, 46, was arrested in England for allegedly sharing sexually explicit photos with a 15-year-old boy in Coweta County.
Coweta County Sergeant Jason Fetner said the Sheriff’s Office tracked down Slater after the Coweta boy’s parents reported the case earlier this month.
According to the Sergeant the relationship started on a twitter account on the teen’s Apple Ipod.
“It's my understanding that when the contact first took place it was at least innocuous or just friendly chitchat but at some point relatively quickly it segued into sexual contact,” said Fetner.
Fetner said he tracked Slater's tweets and found they had been geotagged in a location around Slater’s home in England. Fetner then contacted U.K. authorities, who promptly raided Slater’s home and allegedly found incriminating evidence.
Slater is charged in England with cause to incite a boy between the ages of 13 and 15 to engage in sexual activity.
According to investigators this incident shows how important it is that parents not only monitor what their kids are doing with their smart devices, but educate themselves how smart phones and social media work.
