121 athletes to represent Texas during Special Olympics; 7 from Austin-area

Posted: Updated:
More than 150 people—including 121 athletes and 33 coaches—will represent Texas during the Special Olympics USA Games in New Jersey in June. Members of Team Texas will compete in 11 sports during the weeklong games held from June 14 to 21.

The Austin area will have seven athletes and one coach on Team Texas. The athletes—including a Unified Partner who does not have intellectual disabilities—will be competing in Aquatics, Athletics, Golf and Powerlifting. The coach will supervise athletes in Golf. (A list of the athletes and the coach, including hometowns, appears below.)

More than 3,500 athletes and 1,000 coaches from across the United States are expected to compete in the USA Games.

“We are proud to have so many athletes and coaches representing Team Texas at the 2014 USA Games. This competition will be the culmination of hundreds of hours of hard work by these athletes and their coaches, and I look forward to watching them show the rest of the United States what Texans are made of,” said Margaret M. Larsen, president and CEO of Special Olympics Texas.

The Team Texas delegation includes several Unified Partners. Special Olympics Unified Sports brings together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities to train and compete on the same team.

The USA Games will hold competitions in some of the top sports venues in New Jersey, including Princeton University, Rider University, The College of New Jersey, Mercer County Park and several private schools.

Athletes and coaches will participate in spectacular special events from the moment they arrive, including a New Jersey Welcome Day, the Opening Ceremony at the Prudential Center, a dinner boat cruise to see the Statue of Liberty, several sports showcases and the Closing Ceremony at Sun National Bank Center. Games organizers also will create a Jersey Shore-themed Olympic Town complete with a boardwalk for the athletes.
