Could a mileage fee fix Michigan's crumbling roads?

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- Can Michigan fix its crumbling roads by charging motorists for miles driven? A new study says yes.

A study conducted by the University of Michigan outlines the pros and cons of implementing a mileage fee for Michigan drivers. It suggests that charging drivers based on their actual miles driven can raise as much money needed to solve Michigan's road funding crisis.

The report was prepared by Sustainable Mobility & Accessibility Research & Transformation (SMART) at U-M.

Researchers claim a mileage fee would fairly allocate costs based on the number of miles driven, the time of day driving and the route taken. The weight of the vehicle would also play a factor.

SMART says basing future road funding models on fuel taxes is obsolete due to declining fuel consumption and more efficient and electric vehicles.
