Postal Service ranks Phoenix 11th for dog attacks

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix has made its way onto the U.S. Postal Service's national list of top dog-attack cities.

More than 5,580 postal employees were attacked by dogs last year, and 32 of those attacks were in Phoenix. That puts the city at No. 11 along with Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Houston came out on top with 63 attacks. Los Angeles followed with 61 attacks, and Cleveland, Ohio, recorded 58 attacks.

The postal service released the list Wednesday as it prepared to kick off National Dog Bite Prevention Week. Postal officials say dog attacks are a nationwide issue, not just a problem for postal workers.

Postal officials say dog attacks can be avoided through responsible pet ownership. They're recommending that people secure their dogs before opening the front door and accepting mail.
