Gibson: VA has lost trust of vets, American people

The Department of Veterans Affairs has lost the trust of veterans and the American people as a result of widespread treatment delays for people seeking health care and falsified records to cover up those delays, the agency's top official said Wednesday.

The American Legion in Phoenix held a town hall meeting that focused on health care at the Phoenix VA medical center.

The facility has been the focus of an investigation after claims were made of secret waiting lists, extensive delays in medical care, and that delays contributed to the deaths of up to 40 patients.

At the meeting the new interim director of the Phoenix VA medical center, Steve Young was introduced.

Veterans from all branches of the military described problems with getting care from the VA.

Young says that he hopes to find solutions to the broken system.

"My job is to help restore this medical center, to bring faith back to the healthcare that veterans have earned, and they deserve, and that is my purpose for being here," said Young.

Young said he will be interim director at the Phoenix VA until they get to the bottom of the waitlist and the accusations that delays contributed to the deaths of 40 veterans.
