Residents In Mount Laurel On Edge After Burglary And Attempted Break-In

Posted: Updated:
Mount Laurel, N.J.- A quiet Burlington County community is on high alert after a burglary and an attempted break-in happened within two days, less than a mile apart.

Police say they don't appear to be related, however, people in Mount Laurel are looking over their shoulders and locking their doors.

"That's a shame. I heard some of those things were sentimental. Came from her mother or grandmother, and that's the hardest thing," resident MaryAnn Cerwonka said.

Cerwonka lives along Bretton Way, just doors down from where a burglar broke-in and stole between 5-$10,000 worth of gold jewelry and watches.

To top it off, the theft happened in the wee hours of Sunday morning, which was Mother's Day.

"It’s a little shocking we have a lot of dogs in the neighborhood people have security on their property," said resident Lynette Espositio.

Fox 29 spoke with the owner of the ransacked home off camera. She says she spent Mother's Day crying over the loss of her valuables and more importantly her security.

"I’m just glad no one was hurt that's the most important thing. If they want to get in you'd rather have them take the stuff without waiting for you to come home or be home," said Cerwonka.

But, just half a mile away someone was home.

When police say a stranger tried to break down a front door here in the 100 block of Hastings Way on Friday night.

"The homeowner heard the commotion at the front door somebody trying to kick in. He yelled out to stop and who's there and whoever was kicking the door left at that time," said Mount Laurel Police Lieutenant Stephen Riedener.

"I know there's elderly people that live in this complex that are home all day. That's really scary," said neighbor Tammy Rosario.

Mount Laurel police say the attempted burglary doesn’t appear to be connected to the jewelry theft, but residents in both neighborhoods are uneasy.

“We definitely are on the lookout. We're more aware now off things going on especially if you see it driving once down the street if you see it twice we'll call the police now,” said Cerwonka.

Police say they don’t have any suspects for either incident. If you have any information, please call Mount Laurel Detectives.
