The Austin Fire Department says that lightning strikes caused several fires overnight in the Austin area.

AFD reported to at least three fires in the early-morning hours around the city.

Around 1:00 a.m., AFD crews responded to a fire in the 5500 block of Zachary Scott Street. Firefighters found a 2-story home on fire, with flames shooting out of the roof. They were able to extinguish the blaze in less than ten minutes.

Damage to the home is estimated at $40,000. No injuries were reported.

At 3:50 a.m., firefighters also responded to a fire at the University Crest Apartments in the 1600 block of Royal Crest Drive. Lightning struck the roof of the building and caused a fire on the balcony of a second-floor apartment.

Two residents were displaced by the fire. The only damage to the interior of the unit was caused by fire control. There were no reported injuries.
