Flagstaff city workers patrol for fire hazards

Posted: Updated:

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - Flagstaff police and firefighters have begun patrolling the wooded areas within the city limits to look for fire hazards.

Police spokesman Cory Runge says teams of two have been educating residents about fire danger and looking for ways to reduce the risk of wildfire.

The teams also will be documenting any campsites that need to be cleaned up.

The efforts as part of the Woods Watch program. Dozens of people recently were trained on how to properly report incidents that could spark wildfires, such as people sneaking into closed areas and disregarding fire restrictions.

Officials say the ongoing drought and windy conditions could cause fires to spread quickly, endangering lives and property.
