2 Passengers In Balloon Crash From The Delaware Valley

Richmond, Va.-Two local people are tied to that deadly hot air balloon crash in Virginia.

We're finding out one of the passengers and the pilot were from our area.

The crash happened Friday north of Richmond when the balloon drifted into a power line before bursting into flames.

Investigators recovered the third body on Sunday.

The pilot has been identified by family as Daniel Kirk of Dover, Delaware.

Officials say he tried desperately to save the lives on board the doomed hot air balloon that caught fire and crashed.

Family and friends are in shock tonight.

The tragedy also took the life of Philadelphia native Ginny Doyle, a 44-year-old associate coach for the women's basketball team at the University of Richmond.

"It's not like you would think anyone's life would be ended in that type of way,” Fran Weisser said.

Weisser says she's friends with Doyle's mother, and learned of the accident moments before speaking with Fox 29.

“It just grieves our heart terribly to finally come to the realization that it is our friend's child that tragically passed. That's a sore spot for me," she said.

Doyle was a star basketball player at Archbishop Ryan High School in Northeast Philadelphia.

She was known for great free-throw shooting skills.

"She couldn't be more prideful of her daughter Ginny and of her achievements in her field," Weisser said.

Ginny broke a NCAA record when she played for the University of Richmond before taking a coaching and recruiting job there.

"Just the happiness that she could see in her child; succeeded in life and her passion and the daughter's passion was basketball and coaching," Weisser said.

Fran Weisser says she is still coming to terms with her friend's loss.

"Our hearts are torn for them and just pray for comfort for them, for the family," she said.

    Cooler and drier air moves in today but the heat and humidity return for the second half of the holiday weekend.

    A cold front came through last night meaning cooler, less humid air is moving in for Thursday.  Mostly sunny skies and winds gusting to 25mph are also expected today.  Friday starts off very cool and also features a pleasant afternoon.

     The holiday weekend is looking warmer and unsettled. Shower and thunderstorm chances increaselate Sunday and Labor Day.
