A young man spending time with his friends on Lady Bird Lake this evening has gone missing
Lt. Andre Delareza with the Austin Fire Department says they got the call a little after 7:00 Saturday evening. A group of friends were kayaking and paddle boarding by the dam near Redbud Trail when they lost track of one of their group. They say the young man was swimming back to his paddle board and they think he might have went under. EMS and AFD crews had rescue swimmers in the water in under 10 minutes. Due to the water temperature, AFD says they searched for 20 minutes before switching to recovery mode.
"There's a lot of currents right here, especially as you can see, we're right at the base of Tom Miller Dam, so there's a lot of currents there and even around there so it can be a very tricky area to be swimming in if they've been out all day, he might have just gotten exhausted," Delareza said.
We're told Austin Police are also checking other leads to make sure the young man didn't just get out and go somewhere. In the meantime the APD dive team are in the water with dive lights and scuba divers.
