Legally blind pole vaulter finishes 4th in UIL state meet
Legally blind Charlotte Brown, out of Emory Rains High near Dallas competed in the Girls 3A pole vault in the UIL State and Track meet in Austin.
Brown finished 8th at last year's meet.
Friday, she cleared 11 feet in the competition, finishing 4th in her division.
"I guess there certainly were a few more cameras on me today but as a vaulter and as a competitor, you learn to block all that stuff out and I actually wear earplugs in my ears when I vault, which doesn't sound like it makes a lot of sense considering I go off of a verbal cue but I use those and it helps me block out some the extra noise so I just tune everything out," Brown said.
She added, "Of course when you don't win as a competitor, your initial reaction is to be down and of course I wanted to go higher today, so my initial reaction was 'man I wish I had made that height' but to hear everybody stand up and cheer was really cool."
