Police seek man in Central Austin carjacking

Posted: Updated:

"I was yelling at him," said carjacking victim, Marie Felan. "No, get out of my car. You're not going to take my car."

Marie Felan is the woman you see in this surveillance video from the non-profit organization, Manos de Cristo.

Felan said, "The only thing I can remember is, this little smirk, like, is this woman really trying to take this car back?"

According to police reports, Felan was in the 4900 block of Harmon Avenue, at about 8 p.m. Thursday night, when she was carjacked.

"I got in my car and pulled out, as you can see on the surveillance, and I pulled forward realizing that my event sign was still in the yard," she said.

She was wrapping up a donor appreciation event at Manos de Cristo, where they provide low-cost dental care, ESL classes, pastoral counseling and emergency supplies.

"I had walked out with my team, but I had forgotten something," recalled Felan. "There was a lot going on the other end of the building...and it was still daylight, so...I didn't feel like there was any threat around me."

Look in the right corner of the screen and you see the suspect appear.

He looks like just another passer-by, but as Marie goes to put the sign in her trunk, he darts inside the Nissan Altima.

"That was not the right thing to do," admitted Felan. "There could have been a weapon involved, anything could have happened, but it was, it was just instinct."

She admits her husband was not too happy to see her struggling with the carjacker.

Felan said, "You feel violated. I feel angry."

The mother of five says she lost her phone, keys and purse when the suspect took off in her car.

"We had to change locks. The agency had to change locks. We had to change accounts. I mean, you have to do everything you can to protect yourself unfortunately," said Felan.

Police are working on the case, but need help from the community to track down the suspect.

"What do you want for mother's day? You want that a person who carjacked you and took your car to bring it back," Felan said.

Police are looking for the suspect. He's described as a white man with really short hair, about 5' 9", with a slim build and tattoos on his arms. The stolen car is a pearl-white Nissan Altima with license plate CH2-L821.
