PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A budget battle showdown took place at Phoenix City Hall on Wednesday as council members discussed pay cuts for hundreds of workers, including first responders as they try to close a deficit.

Late Wednesday evening, just after 11 p.m. the council voted to move forward with the cuts, including a cut to police services.

It is a bitter battle type atmosphere as the council, for the first time in history voted to force city workers into a contract some do not want to accept.

The Phoenix Police Officer's union is not backing down, they're refusing to accept any kind of pay cut. The City of Phoenix is facing a 38 million dollar dollar deficit and the city manager has proposed a 1.6 % pay cut to all city workers which would save the city 16 million dollars this year.

The union says that enough is enough, officers have taken pay cuts in the past 4 years, and due to the danger of their jobs they should not have to take a pay cut. The plan would not cut police officer salaries but it would cut from a promised pay increase that was agreed upon during a past cut.

"The city needs to stop playing the game of battleship. With the citizens on one side and the employees on one side, each trying to sink each other's battleship," said a resident.

"If there's going to be suffering here, then I'm suggesting that you all take a 10% pay cut, yes a 10 % pay cut, because you are the stewards, you should have seen this coming and you failed to see this coming," said another resident.
