Massive Sinkhole Opens Up In Front Of West Philadelphia Pizza Shop

Posted: Updated:

A massive sinkhole opened up right in front of a popular Philadelphia pizza shop, but now the owner says the problem has grown into something much bigger.

Fox 29’s Joyce Evans has the report.

A busted underground water or sewer pipe is a nightmare for any neighborhood, however, for Pete’s Pizza owner the anxiety and cost in lost business seems never ending.

"A mess, I'm speechless," manager Dave Whitaker said.

Especially, when you take in the distance the hole has opened since crews discovered a sewer line break under the walk at 52 and Haverford over three weeks ago.

“One hole got bigger and bigger, and this is what you see. This is a new one," Whitaker said.

Whitaker says he's lost half his business, serving customers through the kitchen now,

"It's not safe," he said.

The city utilities say it can't be fixed overnight. The water department is leading the project.

Only a coincidence he says that this crew started filling in the gaping holes when TV crews showed up.

Whitaker still not satisfied.

“Not at all, not at all. It still looks dangerous,” he said.

The city says crews will be right back to start tearing up and suring up the sidewalk.

"Is it enough? Oh wow, then they're coming back tomorrow, we'll see," Whitaker said.
