Evesham Township Police Crackdown On DUI Offenses

Posted: Updated:

Major South Jersey highways are lighting up with red and blue as police get aggressive to catch drunk drivers.

Fox 29's Jennifer Joyce shares one family's story of loss and shows you how it's become constant motivation for Evesham Township police as they work the streets.

“There’s not a couple days that go by that we're not arresting a drunk driver,” Police Lieutenant Friel said.

Police say they're taking their zero tolerance drunk driving policy to the next level.

Each week, they have officers assigned to work overtime shifts to attack Evesham Township's most serious issue.

“Since 2010, we arrested more than 738 people for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” said Police Chief Christopher Chew. “It’s staggering how many people are actually still going out there behind the wheel drinking too much or taking illegal narcotics and putting our residents at risk.”

A driving force behind this mission is 19-year-old Shawn English.

English lost his life to a drunk driver nearly 5 years ago.

“I remember being in the emergency room that night and saying to the doctor he’s just 19 it's not supposed to happen,” said mother, Cindy English.

His parents, Dan and Cindy, say their broken hearts will never heal.

“You just want the world to stop cut to,” Cindy said. “He was going to be somebody and it was a shame that was taken away from him.”

However, his legacy lives on in his community at his favorite place, the local basketball courts at the Blue Barn recreational facility.

And each day he’s remembered by those who loved him the most.

“He just loved life, he loved his friends, loved sports,” Cindy said.

Even officers who didn't know him personally are motivated by his tragic death to crack down on DWI offenders.

Cindy and Dan English support the DWI crackdown.

“If that saves one person, it's so worth the money and the effort,” Cindy said.

Police say each traffic enforcement detail costs about 5-7 thousand dollars, which is money that most police departments do not have in today's economy.

However, thanks to township dollars specifically committed to drunk driving enforcement Evesham Township police will be out enforcing drunk driving laws multiple times a week.
