The City of Austin is preparing for a big change for city council members. In November voters will pick one council member from their respective districts and a mayor at large. While some candidates are announcing there is still plenty of time.
Monday people interested in running for city council or mayor started picking up candidate packets. The packets have more than 200 pages of information and forms. This year, Ann Franklin and her team added district maps to the packets. Franklin is the election clerk within the Austin city clerk's office.
If someone wants to run for office he or she must first appoint a treasurer. More than three dozen people have done that.
"So far I have 46 applications for campaign treasurer appointments on file and they are coming in constantly," said Franklin. Just because someone appoints a treasurer doesn't mean they are on the ballot. Candidates must file for a spot on the ballot and can do so starting July 21st.
