School lock downs lifted in Chandler after search

Posted: Updated:
CHANDLER, Ariz. - Precautionary lock downs on several schools in the Chandler area were lifted after authorities couldn't find a reported suspicious person with a gun.

Around 8:30 a.m. Monday, police received a call from an individual who stated an adult female was at a residence in the area of Ithica St. and Chandler Blvd. with an arrest warrant. While an officer was enroute to the scene, a van was spotted leaving the vicinity of the home.

"The officer recognized this van and believed it belonged to the home in question.  Rather than go to the house, the officer turned around and followed the van," said Detective Seth Tyler.

When the officer attempted a traffic stop, the van's driver fled.

"A short time later two witnesses called 911 to report a male subject with a rifle or shotgun exited a van in a trailer park near Erie St. and Hamilton St.  One witness said the male fled west to a home at the 300 block of north Delaware St.  The other said the male entered a trailer in the complex," stated Tyler.

The SWAT team was called to both homes and no one was located.  Tyler says "The van and a dark colored passenger vehicle were seized from the trailer park.  The subject with the alleged rifle or shotgun is still outstanding."

During the search, Chandler High School, Galveston Elementary, Frye Elementary, St. Mary Basha Catholic, and Chandler Christian Academy were on lock down.

"This investigation is still open and has been assigned to detectives.  We have cleared both scenes of our SWAT team and most officers from neighboring beats have returned to their assignments to resume traffic in their respective areas.  Schools are no longer on lock-down; there is no threat to the public from this individual," said Tyler.  "At this time I have no solid description of the unknown male subject."

It is unknown if these men are both the same suspect, or if they are two separate people.
