Rider University Students Dies In Car Accident

Posted: Updated:
LAWRENCE TWP., N.J. - A Rider University student has died in an overnight crash near the college campus.

Eliseo Diaz was from Union City, New Jersey but had made many friendships at Rider.

His death has those on campus devastated.

Flashing lights, police and a mangled car mark the spot where the 22-year-old Diaz lost his life.

Investigators said he was heading south on Route 206 at a high rate of speed when he collided with a bus exiting Rider University's south parking lot around 2 am after dropping off a group of students.

Diaz was driving without his headlights on.

The bus driver was not hurt.

The senior was set to graduate later this month.

"When I found that out I was like, he was almost done. It's a complete shock because he would have been done in like two weeks. and I know a lot of people were upset because some of my sisters were going to be walking with him and graduating with him,” student Erin Drexler said.

Prosecutors said they're investigating whether alcohol played a role in the crash.

In a statement, the university said:

"We extend our sincerest condolences to his family and friends. We will continue to provide support to Eliseo's family and our campus community."

We're told Diaz was an active member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity.

They asked for privacy during this difficult time.

A member of sorority Phi Sigma Sigma, Drexler said Diaz's death has the Greek community hurting.

"If one Greek goes down, we all like to come together and support each other. I mean its a community. We like to support each other,” she said.

No charges have been filed at this point.

Students will hold a candlelight vigil for Diaz on campus tonight at 8:30.

The university is also providing counseling.
