Austin High School senior Josh Lawson was in class Friday when he learned about a fatal car crash on Barton Hills Drive near Zilker Park. His classmates didn't know the 'who' or 'why' just yet.
"My mind went straight to my friend that lives off Barton Springs and I knew he didn't go to the event today. And they said there [were] three people. And my mind went to one of my other friends who we're also good friends with...they're best friends. My heart just sank, I didn't know what to think. I had to leave the room and I just didn't know what to do," Lawson said.
Austin Police and EMS crews say the car veered off the road and into the tree a little before 11:00 Friday morning splitting the car into two pieces.
There were three people in the car. Two were killed and another was taken to the hospital.
"I was inside and heard a very long skid sound followed by an incredibly loud crash," said neighbor Nina Miller.
APD says the speed limit on the street is 30 and they're working on finding out how fast the car was going.
"The Vehicular Homicide Unit officers will come out with surveying equipment. They will measure several points with the vehicle and skid and they'll plug that information into a computer and hopefully they'll get an accurate speed," said officer Virginia Higginbotham.
At the crash site, students started early in the day leaving memorials.
Lawson says he hopes his classmate at the hospital will be okay. He has good memories of his friends.
"They're always fun to be around. Always make me laugh," he said.
