Northern Boulevard speed limit lowered to 25 mph

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Northern Boulevard in Queens is the latest large roadway to see its speed limit reduced with four times the number of fatalities than other roadways.

Citing five pedestrian deaths over the last few years, officials on Thursday reduced the speed limit along Northern Boulevard to 25 mph from 30 mph. Other major arteries are also being targeted as part of the city's Vision Zero plan to reduce fatalities.

Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg cited one major stat: the major arterials account for 15 percent of the mileage in the city but 60 percent of pedestrian fatalities.

The death of Noshat Nahain, 8, at the hands of a truck driver exemplifies the cost of inaction along the 4-mile stretch that winds past schools, businesses, retail and residential areas.

The DOT said it is retiming the traffic lights so that cars cannot drive too fast down the boulevard.
