A fire in East Austin affected two different homes, leaving residents displaced for at least a night.
A little before 6 p.m. Monday night, Austin fire trucks were dispatched to a house fire at 1803 Whitney way.
Units arrived on scene in less than two minutes because there's a fire station right around the corner.
According to a rep with the Austin Fire Department, there was so much heat coming from the deck area that the fire jumped next door to the house at 1801 Whitney Way.
It took about 20 minutes for firefighters to get the flames under control.
"The damage to the main house at 1803 is very significant. Like I said, it started in the rear of the structure. When firefighters made entry through the front door, they were met by heavy black smoke and then flames rolling out the front door," AFD Lt. Randy Elmore said.
AFD determined the fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.
