Ruth Jacques, 6, of Haiti, has suffered from Vascular Malformation since she was born. The birth defect, which is an enlargement of vessels in her left leg, is not treatable in Haiti due to lack of medical facilities and technology.
A local pediatrician, Dr. Coburn Allen, who works for Dell Children's, learned about Jacques' condition while visiting Haiti and wanted to help her. By coincidence Dell Children's has a rare specialist who is able to treat the disease and the pain and swelling that accompany it. Allen and his wife Sue helped get Jacques and her father Moliere travel visas to come to America, so that Ruth could see specialists at Dell Children's. The Austin couple has opened their home up to the Jacques and a translator while they stay in Austin and Ruth receives treatment.
Jacques has been in Austin for just a few weeks and is already seeing improvement, but she has a long road ahead. She will need to undergo treatment for the disease for 2 years.
All of Jacques' medical care at Dell Children's will be paid for through the Dell Children's Medical Global Outreach program. A non-profit that helps young children in third-world countries receive medical care. If you would like to donate go to www.childrensaustin.org.
