Parts of abandoned home on city's demolition list fall on neighbor's car

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - A Detroit homeowner says his car was damaged when parts of an abandoned home next door came crashing down. He adds that particular home has also been on the city's demolition list for years, but wasn't a priority.

Julian Parker flips homes for a living. He's from Atlanta and wanted to invest in Detroit, so he bought a home on eBay for $5,000.

He did not know the house next door was vacant and dilapidated, and matters got worse Monday when he says parts of that home fell on his car.

"I heard a boom. I woke up; I came out and a huge beam fell on my car. I mean, look at it. Why should I have to live next to that?" he says to FOX 2's Taryn Asher.

Asher has confirmed the abandoned house next door is on the city's demolition list, and although parts of it have come crashing down on Parker's car, demolition of that home is still not considered an emergency.

"They told me didn't have any money nothing they can do about it basically on my own

When the building department checked out the property to determine whether it should be placed on the emergency demolition list, Parker says they told him there wasn't any money for it.

However, Alexis Wiley, spokesperson for Mayor Mike Duggan, says that's not the case and the city is actually moving through the list. The city will use a combination of federal dollars and fire escrow funds set aside for dangerous, abandoned homes. Wiley says that house is now on that list and is expected to come down in a matter of weeks.

"We know that for years these houses have sat on lists, but we're moving aggressively to get these houses down," Wiley says.
