PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Hikers heading out on Piestewa Peak are met with signs warning them to beware of bees, stay on the lookout for snakes and now a new warning -- but this one isn't for hikers, it's for potential crooks -- warning there may be "bait cars" in the parking lot of this popular hiking spot.

"I think when these thieves come in here to look at opportunities for vehicles, I think that's the first thing that they see, and they think.. hmm people are paying attention to what we're doing," said City of Phoenix Park Ranger Joey Verduzco.

Regulars on this trail say they've seen broken glass in the lots where thieves have pulled smash and grabs, taking whatever they can from people's cars while they're up on the mountain.

"Occasionally you do see windows broken out, so it must be happening. I'm glad to see there's some effort to try and stop it," said Eric Nathan.

Olga Gonzales added, "Before we even got out of the car, she's like is anyone going to break into my car? So it is a bummer that we have to even worry about that."

"It's better to park where there's actually a lot of cars and a lot of people going in and out -- when you park in the outlying areas, it tends to be a little bit risky," said Roy Michael.

That's why the best advice is to never leave any valuables in your car while you're out on a hike, or at least try to hide it from view.

Hikers hope these new signs will deter thieves, but some are skeptical.

"People that do that sort of thing, know how to do it and that's why they do it. And they're probably pretty successful," said Nathan.
