PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

They're cute for Easter, but bunnies require a big commitment.

That's why many do not survive after they're given as gifts on Easter Sunday.

Bunnies make great pets; they can roam free in the house; they're litter box trained, and they're very cute. But like any pet they require lots of care, that's why when they're given as gifts they often do not survive.

"She was abandoned in the middle of the night in a shoe box," said Kelly Ames who showed FOX10 some rabbits who had been abandoned.

"This is Maya and Parker, and they were actually being kept outside in a cage in the middle of summer when they were just babies," said Ames.

Ames is the executive director at Tranquility Trail, one of three rabbit rescues in Arizona. Volunteers care for more than 70 rabbits at the non-profit rescue, they expect to get many more calls after Sunday.

"A lot of them are dumped outside where they cannot survive. These guys are domestic bunnies who end up in the shelter system we get over one hundred calls every month from people who don't want their bunnies because they didn't do their research," she said.

Ames hopes more families will choose to give a stuffed toy and chocolate bunnies if they do not plan to care for a real one, the life span for a bunny is 10-12 years.

"They make wonderful pets, but they're not the right choice for everybody," she said.

If you'd like a companion, but you're not ready for the commitment, you can actually volunteer at Tranquility Trail any day of the week and play with the bunnies and help them get used to people.

"They get more relaxed, and sometimes I fall asleep when I pet them," said volunteer Primula Nevel.

Volunteer bunny-hugger Primula Nevel has been cuddling these cuties for 4 1/2 years.

"I think it's very satisfying to spend time with them because they're so appreciative of it," she said.
